The Meaning Behind the Gourd (葫芦 / ‘Hulu’)

In ancient China, traditional doctors would always carry medicines in bottle gourds or ‘hulu‘ when treating their patients.

Besides filling the medicine, the sweet gourd has some curative effects such as eliminating heat and detoxify and helping with the respiratory system.

Over time, the gourd would became a symbol of doctors and healing.

Now, the bottle gourd or on Why Not’s traditional Chinese medicine range represents revitalization and healing by own body with the aid of traditional, high potency Chinese herbs!

What Makes Us Different

1. Certified organic

Why Not Traditional Chinese Herbs are not just naturally or organically grown, we are certified organic all the way from farming to processing.

This ensures safe, clean and potent medicinal herbs that you can cook without worry.

2. More than 40 years of experience

Founded by a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctor since 1979, we have more than 40 years of experience in sourcing for potent and effective Chinese herbs.

3. Potency and safety tested

After selecting the herbs, our master herbalist will ensure that the potency of our herbs meets and exceeds the standards designated by the Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China.

This is done using scientific methods such as microscopy, Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC), High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography (HPTLC), and other “fit for purpose” technology.

We also screen for close to 200 types of pesticides, according to guidelines set by the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) and the European Union (EU). Our herbs are also screened for heavy metals and microbiology.

4. “Di dao”- Geo-authentic Herbs

Similar to wine, temperature, humidity, soil, terrain and micro-climate all affect the potency of medicinal herbs.

In TCM, we refer this to “Dao Di” where it is always preferable to source from native environments for both potency and authenticity.

5. Proper harvesting and processing

Herbs are collected at the optimal time for their growing period, using both traditional and scientific methods. We harvest according to season, time of day or stage to capture the plant’s peak potency where their active constituents are laboratory tested.

Careful drying and storage is done with modern machinery to minimize mold, insect and inappropriate moisture levels to ensure they are delivered to you at the best state.

6. Responsible and sustainable sourcing

One of our top priorities is to preserve the biodiversity of ecosystems and longevity of herbs.

If the use of a herb is not sustainable, we will not source it. We also take only what is needed without wasting any material.

This ensures that these medicinal herbs will be sustainable for future generations to come.

7. Traceability

You will always know where your medicinal herbs come from. This comes with our strong partnership with regional farmers to guarantee a constant quality of herb delivered to your soup bowl.

8. Truly unsulphured

Many TCM products in the market claim to be unsulphured for preservation.

However, in many cases, sulphur is still used during processing as bleaching and rendering to make the herbs look more “pretty” and solid.

Rest assured, however, Why Not’s herbs are always unsulphured, from start to finish, and from farm to food.
